Spring Into Ottawa

Well, it looks like another winter is over and Ottawa is starting to wake up from it's long winter nap.  We have such a great city and I really love walking through the streets and parks and enjoying all the city has to offer.

Saturday was such a beautiful day, after leaving the Vimy Ridge Service at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa I walked through the city and noticed that the city and the people know that Spring has sprung.

Welcome Spring!!!

Majors Hill Park.  Love taking photo's of benches.

This Angel was donated to the NCC by the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation. It used to be on the mortuary chapel of Notre Dame Cemetery in Vanier. Sculptor is unknown but it's beautiful.

The Byward Market is great.  Lots of fresh fruits, veggies, beautiful flowers and baked goodies.  Lemon's anybody?

We have such beautiful buildings in Ottawa.  Love the design of this building.  Perfect!

One of the best statue's in Ottawa.  Oscar Peterson is located just outside the National Art Centre.

Remembering Vimy Ridge

Today I spent time at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to watch the Memorial Services to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge.  It was a moving ceremony with a small number of people attending.   On Friday Night, a number of young students held a candlelight service and they  participated on Saturday by laying a wreath in memory of the this epic battle.

Many people, including most Canadians don’t know the story of Vimy Ridge.  The Battle of Vimy Ridge has considerable significance for Canada as it was the first instance in which all four Canadian divisions, made up of troops drawn from all parts of the country, fought as a cohesive formation.  Many historians believe the Battle of Vimy Ridge symbolized Canada’s coming of age as a nation.

The battle, which took place from 9 April to 12 April 1917 and by nightfall on the 12th, the Canadian Corps was in firm control of the ridge. The corps suffered 10,602 casualties: 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded.

Veterans from all divisions of the military came out to participate in the service.

This Veteran was very moving to watch.  I was watching him during the playing of the Canadian National Anthem and I had tears coming to my eyes.  Thinking of events he's probably seen made me appreciate what all members of the
military past and present do and have done for us.   THANK YOU!

General Walter Natynczyk was part of the service.

Numerous wreaths were left but the first one that was laid was from the Canada.  France was next.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Hockey Night in Orleans

I had an opportunity to photograph some hockey in Orleans this week.  These young players were in play-off action mode.  The Orleans team won the game 3 to 2 which gives them 2 wins out of 3 in the first round of the play-offs.  Good luck in the rest of your season guys!

About Me

My photo
Ottawa, Canada
My family moved from Oakville, Ontario to Pembroke, Ontario in 1976 and from the moment I arrived in the little town of Pembroke my goal was to leave but with being 7 years old I had a number of years to wait. Attending Champlain High School and trying to decide my future, I was determined to go to Sheridan College in Oakville and take the Journalism Program there. I took a Co-op credit through High School and did my work experience at a local Pembroke weekly newspaper where they gave me a notepad, a pen, a camera and sent me out in the vast city of Pembroke. My favourite weekly task was to go to the local human society and take a picture of the Pet of Week. I actually loved my time working on the paper but the photography portion interested me more than the writing. My Journalism dreams didn’t happened but my love of photography carried with me but in the past few years I’ve started to become more and more interested in the technique of photography and in 2009 I received my first DSLR camera and have become a photography junkie. I’m hoping you enjoy following this blog and watch my love for photography grow with each posting.
